Profile Summary

As an occupational therapist I am concerned with promoting health and wellbeing through engagement in meaningful occupations  across the life span and the consideration of how to enable individuals experiencing problems in doing the things they want to, need to or are expected to do due to illness, trauma, disability, transition or environmental difficulties.

I have practice (forensic mental health), managerial (adult and older person's mental health - in patient, day patient and community teams, child and family psychiatry, paediatrics and Art Therapy services) and educational experience (UG and PG and post registration CPD) within the field of occupational therapy, together with experience of innovative curriculum design and delivery specifically in the use of elearning and the online learning experience.

Currently I am Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy and co-Programme Leader  for the MSc Advanced OT programme delivered online. I teach at undergraduate and post graduate levels. I am also the co-developer of Occubuzz - the app for wellbeing.

I have managed a number of successful projects both internal and external to the university, including:

  • 2016/2017 seconded to an HEE funder project, led by MMU as part of the team "Re-imagining the future of health and social care undergraduate education
  • the development of a multi-professional practice placement educator training for the Greater Manchester West Consortium - later adopted by University of Salford,
  • the development of the College of Occupational Therapists Post Qualifying Framework for Occupational Therapists and the Interactive Learning Opportunities Database
  •  a research project commissioned by Ashton, Wigan and Leigh Community Health (now the Bridgewater NHS Trust) through which I developed an  interest in using narratives to access service user experiences.
  • as part of a team of 6 international occupational therapists (OT4OT) I have developed, hosted and facilitated an annual 24 hour Virtual Knowledge Exchange, running since 2010

I am particularly interested in  innovative curriculum design and assessment and have particular experience with developing online learning communities. In addition I am keen to develop awareness within the public health agenda that what we do impacts on how we feel and have co-developed an app (Occubuzz) that can be downloaded free from app stores for all mobile devices.
