My research, closely related to my teaching, is concerned with the renewal of social theory along classical (Machiavellian, Marxian, Weberian) and contemporary (Badiouian) lines. It seeks to conceptualize and analyse on an empirical basis the logics driving different domains or orders of life and the different stances people take towards them. At its core is the issue of the relationship between power and subjectivity, and two central questions: Why do we subjectively submit and consent to what we know it is not acceptable and disastrous? What are the possibilities for subjectivation, i.e. for developing affirmative praxes and forms of life conduct, both collective and individual, as against mere lifestyles and adaptation to the world?
These questions are addressed in four substantive fields: everyday life; politics (political rationalities, social-political movements, human rights); the professional field (calling or vocation and its unfolding in praxis, the present and future of the university and the human sciences); and the digital (social media, big data).
