David’s primary research interest is the development of new technology to allow communication on a more human level. He is Head of the Virtual Environments and Future Media Research Centre and Co-General Chair of IEEE ACM Distributed Simulation and Real Time Applications. David has been researching collaborative virtual environments for over 15 years and specifically the impact of level of immersion on collaboration for over 10 years. He has designed a number of cutting edge immersive display and capture spaces and telepresence systems. The current focus of his work is on developing a communication medium where both attention and appearance can be communicated. This is being approached by combining the winning qualities of video conferencing and immersive collaborative virtual environments in 3D free viewpoint video. Other current research includes adaptive architecture and immersive display and capture for training and assessment. David was the first to show how eye-gaze could be communicated between people moving in different spaces through technology across a distance.
