Profile Summary

I have a number of ongoing research interests:

Human Toxoplasmosis in Libya.  Investigation of vertical transmission of Toxoplasma gondii during pregnancy.
Human Toxoplasmosis in the UK. Investigation of vertical transmission of Toxoplasma gondii during pregnancy. Collaboration with Stepping Hill Hospital Manchester, UK.

Analysis of Toxoplasma gondii infections in the woodmouse, Apodemus sylvaticus, with reference to parasite distribution and vertical transmission.

Human sleeping sickness and animal trypanosomiasis. Part of an international multidisciplinary research programme led by Edinburgh University. (1) Investigation of mobile genetic elements as potential tools for studying the epidemiology of sleeping sickness.  (2) Development of a universal PCR based diagnostic system for the detection of trypanosomiasis. (3) Investigation of trypanosomiasis in Nigeria.

Investigation of vertical transmission of Toxoplasma gondii in sheep.

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii in UK bats. .

Collaborating Investigator (with Professor Gai Murphy) – Detection of vertical transmission of Toxoplasma gondii  in Mus domesticus in natural populations and closed colonies.

Collaborating Investigator (with Professor Gai Murphy) – Use of microsatellite based population genetics as a tool in environmental health to define the ranging behavior of Mus domesticus.

Investigation of co-infection of Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii in mice, sheep and rabbits. .

Toxoplasmosis, trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis in China. In collaboration with Professor Zhao-Rong Lun, Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, China. Projects include: (1) investigation into the mechanisms of virulence/avirulence of Toxoplasma gondii in mice and rats. (2) Genotyping of T. gondii strains isolated from cats in China. (3) Detection of T. lewisi from rats in China. (4) Study of the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in pregnant women in China. (5) The current state of leishmaniasis in China.

The discovery of a new species of trematode, Notocotylus malhamensis in the UK. One PhD studentship. In collaboration with Professors Mike Rogan and Phil Craig.
