Profile Summary

I am a Reader in English and Creative Writing. I am an internationally-published, broadcast and award-winning poet, haibun and short story/autography writer and playwright. I have a special interest in visual text, haiku and Japanese aesthetics, and collaborative and solo translation. I am currently translating a series of Old English riddles. My academic publications include several books on the early 20th century poet Edward Thomas and a number of chapters and articles on Visual Text and the process of creative composition. My next monographs will be focused on the riddle of haiku and various ways of translating this form in English, and on the thickness of language - the borders of articulation/inarticulation, have in relation to literary uses of African English, experimental and reflective translation processes, poetic aesthetics as they relate to these, including Japanese aesthetics, and even the creative processes of J.R.R. Tolkien. If you are interested in pursuing any of these topics at doctorate level do contact me.

Further details:

Overview of research

I am active as a researcher in visual text, poetic composition, parallels between poetry and meditative thought processes, translation, poetry and embodiment, haiku and Japanese aesthetics. I am a specialist critic on the poetry of Edward Thomas, and also work as a collaborative/solo literary translator. My creative work spans the genres of short fiction, poetry, haiku, visual text, digital poetry and plays for the theatre.

Academic research

I have written two monographs on Edward Thomas and edited two books of his letters and related poetry. Two of these volumes have been included in Guardian round ups of best book and best nature writing of the year. I have a special interest in Visual text as creator, critic and teacher. I co-edited the special Visual Text issue of 2013 European Journal of English Studies, and have written extensively on aspects of visual text in both my Edward Thomas monographs, and on the use of textual and graphic effects in critical writing and reading in the 2013 Manchester University Press, Writing Otherwise. My research on the thickness of language has taken me into investigations of literary uses of African English, the processes of creative and visual translation, J.R.R. Tolkien's creative processes as they relate to his dozen or so invented languages, and poetry as embodied gardening. I also have a keen interest in Japanese aesthetics, see my 2016 article: 'Jo Ha Kyu and Fu Bi Xing: Reading|Viewing Haiku' in the haiku journal, Juxtapositions 2.1.

Creative practice

I have four collections of poetry, the most recent being a collection of visual gardening poetry, insatiable carrot (2015). The others are The Drier The Brighter (2007), nominated for the Forward First Collection award, Joy Change (2010) and climbing postcards (2012), nominated for the Boardman Tasker mountain literature award. My poems and haiku have featured in the Forward best single poems anthologies of 2007, 2010 and Best Poems of the First Decade of the 21st Century and the Red Moon Press 2016 anthology of best English Language haiku of 2015. Most recently I have won an An (Cottage) award in the 2019 Genjuan International Haibun Contest

I participated in Alec FInlay's White Peak Dark Peak renga project, the largest work of public art in the UK http://www.whitepeak-darkpeak.co.uk/, nominated for the international Alice Awards for public art. A more recent solo investigation of the visual and poetic relations between land and self occurs in my ¿Mismapping¿, an extended visual poetic piece published in the 2017 Liquorice Fish Books anthology What Lies Within. I am also currently contributing to the Riddle Ages project of translations and commentaries on Old English riddles https://theriddleages.wordpress.com/2017/08/10/riddle-65-or-63/. My visual investigation of this creative translation process 'brief brief: a riddle', can be found in the 2017 Versal Literary & Arts Journal 12, Amsterdam.

Collaborations and performances

In the past I have collaborated with digital artist Steven Earnshaw on a series of digital interactive and animated poems- see flash art gallery http://teaching.shu.ac.uk/ds/sle/ earnshaw/gallery, and with typographer Tim Isherwood on a series of typographic poems. My poems, short fiction and translations are published in a number of magazines and websites, including Ambit, Stand and PN Review, Financial Times, Versal (Amsterdam).

Incredible Edible Todmorden have installed a series of my vegetable haiku on the Todmorden railway approach and as ¿Edible Poetry¿ on their website https://www.incredible-edible-todmorden.co.uk/blogs/?c=edible-poetry. Poetry readings have included venues in the UK (Manchester, Bradford, Liverpool, London, Chester, Cheltenham, Hay-on-Wye, Cambridge), the Netherlands (Amsterdam, Groningen) and the Czech Republic (Olomouc). Readings and performance of my translation of a kyogen play, Fumininai /Weighed down by Love, took place at Slough's 2007 East@West Festival, and Contact Theatre, Manchester, 2008. My music lyrics have been performed at the Purcell Room, South Bank, London.
