This project will posit a question of how to visualise the reative gesture of a city. Every city has its own creative story. The subject matter to be explored in this project will be curated from recordings of past and present narratives. Data will then be transposed using digital technologies with the aim to present a gallery of coded interconnected emotional information that is revealed from the content of a creative space. The project contains a high level of collaboration, and includes projects with colleagues working in Computer Science, Acoustics, Geo Tagging technology and Visual Arts. He has also contributed research data for the scoping document of the University theme of Memory Text and Place. In addition he is involved in the initial stages of the Dementia Design Group. This is a cross university group lead by Natalie Yates-Bolton.

In 2010 John set up a new national Typographic Research Initiative (TRI) in conjunction with Birmingham City University. The group has members from universities across the country. A series of type-based symposia are planned for 2011/2012.

John is also coordinating the Salford University presentation of a forthcoming typographic exhibition to be presented February 2012 in MediaCity which will coincide with a Typographic Research + Practice forum.
