Profile Summary

Maria has an academic background in information science and is a qualified Librarian with over 25 years experience working in health information.  She is employed as a Research Fellow (Writing for Publication) in the Centre of Applied Research in Health, Welfare & Policy and has most recently worked on projects examining the effect of nurse-to-patient ratios on nurse-sensitive patient outcomes in acute specialist units; investigating the self-management of long-term conditions; exploring the support need of carers for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; and scrutinising the factors that affect public engagement with eHealth services in the management of their health.

Maria is a member of the LIS Research Coalition's DREaM (Developing Research Excellence and Methods) cadre seeking to develop a formal UK-wide network of Library and Information Science researchers.

Since 2009, Maria has been Editor-in-Chief of the official journal of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals' Health Libraries Group, the ISI listed Health Information and Libraries Journal (http://wileyonlinelibrary.com/journal/hilj).

Maria's research interests include the role of published information, both its production and its application into practice, and how peer support writers group can contribute to these processes. Her interest in professional academic writing has lead Maria to undertake a mid-career PhD at Liverpool John Moores University exploring how academics acquire the skills to write for publication.
