Having graduated in mathematics from Loughborough and Liverpool Universities, I joined the University of Salford in 1991 as a lecturer and progressed to senior lecturer and reader before gaining promotion in 2008 to my current role as Professor of Statistics in Salford Business School. I am a Chartered Mathematician and a Chartered Scientist.

Research convenor for international operations and information management, and associate director of the Centre for Sports Business, I am also a member of a national research group for mathematical methods in reliability and external examiner at the University of Keele. I hold honorary roles with the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications as North West Branch chairman, Finance Committee member and Conferences Committee member.

I have delivered modules and supervised projects for students at all levels and served as admissions tutor, industrial placements tutor and programme leader. I have received grants for collaborative research, organised conferences and meetings, hosted research visits, published journal papers, graduated research students and presented academic seminars.

My research mostly involves applications of stochastic processes and Bayesian probability to solve problems in reliability, sport and health care. Novel contributions include hybrid intensities models for repairable systems, interactive shrinkage methods for class handicapping, original design of an optimal dartboard and diagnostic models for Doppler ultrasound.

I have presented my research at international conferences and worked on contracts that include sonar analysis with the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, research support for the National Health Service, project supervision for the Malaysian government, randomness testing with the National Lottery Commission and preparation of expert reports for lawyers.
