Profile Summary

I am a Professor of Mathematics in Salford Business School with research interests in mathematical modelling and statistical analysis in business. Original developments include contributions to multivariate analysis, stochastic processes and Bayesian inference, along with an optimal dartboard, new randomness tests, generic handicapping systems and hybrid intensity models. Impact includes improvements to arterial disease diagnosis, dengue disease mapping, trauma hospital performance, national lottery regulation, Paralympic sports analysis, tournament scoring formats, preventive maintenance scheduling and vehicle inspection centres. I was a keynote speaker at COSTAS 2017 international conference in Samsun, Turkey.


I have organised visits and conferences, presented seminars and lectures, published 76 refereed articles, received 27 grants, supervised 2 postdoctoral researchers and graduated 13 research students. Project collaborators include the National Health Service, Trauma Audit and Research Network, National Lottery Commission, Detectronic, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, International Paralympic Committee, Magnetic Resonance and Image Analysis Research Centre, Smith Institute for Industrial Mathematics and System Engineering, Malaysian Ministry of Transport, Malaysian Ministry of Health, Winmau, Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, and various academics, surgeons and lawyers.


I hold honorary positions for the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications as Chair of the Mathematics Today Editorial Board, Chair of the Conferences Committee, a Member of the Finance Committee and a Member of the North West Branch Committee, having previously served as a Member of Council and Chair of the North West Branch Committee. I am also a Member of the Mathematical Methods in Reliability Joint Research Group with colleagues from Durham, Strathclyde and Brunel Universities, and previously served the Royal Statistical Society as Chair of the General Applications Section and a Member of the Manchester Group Committee.


I am a Member of the Centre for Sports Business, Chair of the School Research, Enterprise and Engagement Ethical Approval Panel, an Auditor for the University Academic Ethics Committee, a Member of the School Ethical Approval Committee, Deputy Chair of the School Ethical Approval Panel for Taught Programmes and a Member of the Athena SWAN School Assessment Team. I deliver lectures, seminars and guided study for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and have experience as visiting professor, academic investigator, external examiner, internal examiner, independent chair, editor, reviewer, referee, research convener, research committee member, doctoral supervisor, programme leader, module leader, industrial placements tutor and admissions tutor.
