Profile Summary

I am a Professor of Mathematics, Associate Director of the Centre for Sports Business, Chair of the Research, Enterprise and Engagement Ethics Approval Panel, and a Member of the School Ethics Committee. I deliver lectures and tutorials for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and have experience as visiting professor, external examiner, reviewer, editor, referee, research committee member, academic investigator, research convenor, doctoral supervisor, programme leader, module leader, internal examiner, industrial placements tutor and admissions tutor. My research involves mathematical modelling in sport, reliability and healthcare. Original contributions include hybrid intensity models, generic handicapping systems, new randomness tests and an optimal dartboard, with developments in multivariate analysis, stochastic processes and Bayesian inference. I have organised research conferences, hosted visits and workshops, presented seminars and lectures, published 75 refereed articles, received 27 grants, supervised 2 postdoctoral researchers and graduated 13 research students.

I hold honorary positions for the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications as a Member of Council, Chair of the Mathematics Today Editorial Board, Chair of the Conferences Committee, a Member of the Finance Committee and Past Chair of the North West Branch Committee. I am a Member of the Mathematical Methods in Reliability Joint Research Group and a Past Chair of the General Applications Section of the Royal Statistical Society. Project collaborators include the National Health Service, Trauma Audit and Research Network, National Lottery Commission, Detectronic, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, International Paralympic Committee, Magnetic Resonance and Image Analysis Research Centre, Smith Institute for Industrial Mathematics and System Engineering, Malaysian Ministries of Transport and Health, Winmau, Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, and various academics, surgeons and solicitors. Recent doctoral graduates studied mathematical modelling in reliability and healthcare. I would be interested in supervising future PhD students for mathematical modelling in sport, if they have original ideas or novel data sets.
