Profile Summary

I am currently researching a collection of issues relating to security, including British interrogation in Iraq (2003-8), commissions of inquiry into security matters, the effects of the 1971-8 European Court of Human Rights case Ireland vs. UK on Anglo-Irish relations, and allegations of collusion relating to the use of informers during 'the troubles'.  More broadly my research interests fall into the areas of intelligence ethics, human rights and the prohibition of torture, insurgency and terrorism, policymaking, Northern Ireland and Britain’s colonial history.

My book, Interrogation, Intelligence and Security: Controversial British Techniques, was published by Manchester University Press in May 2015.  It addresses the use of controversial interrogation techniques, believed by many to constitute torture, in Aden (1963-7), Northern Ireland (1971) and Iraq (2003).

A co-authored book, Why Spy? The Art of Intelligence, written with Brian T.W. Stewart CMG, former Secretary of the Joint Intelligence Committee and Deputy Chief of SIS (MI6), was published by Hurst in June 2015 and launched in the House of Commons the same month.

I am willing to supervise dissertations in intelligence ethics, contemporary intelligence issues, counter-insurgency and the contemporary history and politics of Northern Ireland.
