Profile Summary
I joined Salford in 2007. My research and teaching interests are in Romantic period literature, Transatlantic Studies, periodical culture, and in literature and culture of the Nineteenth Century generally. I graduated in English and European Literature from the University of Essex, then produced my doctoral thesis for Cambridge University on Romantic period cultural poetics in the work of Walter Scott and Lord Byron. A visiting postdoctoral Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities in Edinburgh in 2004, and a visiting Fellowship at the University of Essex from 2005 enabled me to develop a study of critical journalism in Britain and America in the first half of the Nineteenth Century. I have published journal articles on Lord Byron, Walter Scott, ballad poetry, and on periodical writing and editorial practice. I continue to conduct research on Romantic period literature and culture in Britain and North America, and my next book will be a transatlantic study of periodical journalism, titled Arbiters of Opinion: Periodicals and Critical Journalism in Britain and North America, c.1800-c.1860. The British Academy awarded me the Rose Mary Crawshay Prize 2007 for my book Scott, Byron and the Poetics of Cultural Encounter (Basingstoke and New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2005).
