Research Interests include New Jazz Studies, Critical Musicology, Composition and Interdisciplinary Thinking.

Working in practice-based environments has enabled me to champion the relationship between theory and practice, and to encourage performers, composers and musicologists to engage critically with music as a discursive cultural practice. I have also played a significant role in developing research infrastructure for interdisciplinary jazz research at a national and international level through my work at the Centre for Jazz Studies UK and as a member of the European Pop/Jazz platform, and more recently, as co-editor of the Jazz Research Journal.  I am currently the project leader for the Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) funded Rhythm Changes: Jazz Cultures and European Identities project.  The three year project is a world-leading research initiative, the first and largest of its kind for jazz in Europe, and involves a core team of 13 researchers working in five European countries (see www.rhythmchanges.net).
