This paper reports on the recent development of a physico-chemical model for the water retention characteristic of porous media and its application to the prediction of water vapour sorption isotherm of cementitious materials. This research aims to develop a convenient method for analysis of pore size distribution. The model is used to predict the water vapour isotherm, which is compared with those using a traditional model.

Since publication, the paper has generated significant interest from industry. A company, Surface Measurement Systems [www.thesorptionsolution.com, Dr. Phil Attwool, PAttwool@smsuk.co.uk] based in London having been directed to the paper by a colleague in the US, contacted me. They anticipate future collaboration. A second international enquiry envisaged further collaborative research on the topic. Recently, a further work based on this paper has been accepted for publication, and a research proposal is in preparation.
