Profile Summary

Current role and responsibilities

Since 2006 I have been the Director of Midwifery and Lead Midwife for Education on behalf of the NMC. After 41 years of service to NHS/University and midwifery I have taken flexible retirement and now I am senior lecturer in a team of midwifery lecturers where our aim is to achieve the University goals and uphold a student centred approach to teaching and learning. I have a diverse and interesting position and straddle various interfaces of clinical practice, education, management and research at national and local level.

Research Interests

My professional background is in midwifery care and practice. The focus for my research interest is on practice development through action research and action learning. My PhD study examined the evolving roles of a group of education and practice development midwives as they led change in clinical practice. This developed my capability in facilitation and coaching for leadership roles in the clinical environment and led me to enjoy and use appreciative inquiry approaches to learning and change. I am now researching with Rose McCarthy on a HENW funded Social Media Project. (£250,000)

Teaching

My academic interests focus on midwifery practice and policy, strategic leadership, risk management, qualitative research methodologies, and I continue to teach at every level on undergraduate and taught postgraduate midwifery and leadership programmes. I supervise postgraduate students.

Background
I joined the University of Salford in 1998 as a Lecturer in Midwifery. I have spent 41 years in nursing and midwifery practice, education, management and research. I have managed maternity, gynaecology and children’s services in the NHS, instigated new ways of working through designing midwifery led care and worked across the interfaces of education, clinical practice and research.
