Profile Summary

I am a Professor of Operational Research and Applied Statistics in Salford Business School. I have made original contributions to multivariate analysis, stochastic processes and Bayesian inference. Novel developments include hybrid intensity models, generic handicapping methods, predictive prior elicitation, lottery randomness tests, optimal dartboard layout, snooker decision system and social influence measure. External impact includes preventive maintenance scheduling, sonar signal processing, vehicle inspection reliability, national lottery regulation, Paralympic sports analysis, tournament scoring formats, arterial disease diagnosis, trauma hospital performance and dengue disease mapping.


I have organised visits and conferences, presented seminars and lectures, published 78 refereed articles, received 28 grants, supervised 2 postdoctoral researchers and graduated 14 research students. Project collaborators include the National Health Service, National Lottery Commission, UK Research Councils, Malaysian Ministry of Transport, Malaysian Ministry of Health, International Paralympic Committee, Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, Smith Institute for Industrial Mathematics and System Engineering, Trauma Audit and Research Network, Magnetic Resonance and Image Analysis Research Centre, Winmau, Detectronic and various academics, surgeons and lawyers.


I hold honorary positions for the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications as Chair of the Conferences Committee, a Member of the Finance Committee and a Member of the North West Branch Committee, having previously served as a Member of Council, Chair of the Mathematics Today Editorial Board and Chair of the North West Branch Committee. I am also a Member of the Mathematical Methods in Reliability Joint Research Group and previously served the Royal Statistical Society as Chair of the General Applications Section and a Member of the Manchester Group Committee. I was a keynote speaker at COSTAS 2017 international conference in Samsun, Turkey.


I am a Member of the Centre for Sports Business, Chair of the School Research Ethics Approval Panel, Deputy Chair of the School Taught Ethics Approval Panel, a Member of the School Ethics Approval Committee, an Auditor for the University Ethics Committee and a Member of the Athena SWAN School Assessment Team. I teach undergraduate and postgraduate students, and have experience as visiting professor, academic investigator, external examiner, internal examiner, independent chair, editor, reviewer, referee, research convener, research committee member, doctoral supervisor, programmeleader, module leader, industrial placements tutor and admissions tutor.
