My background is in mental health nursing and I am a qualified marital and sex therapist. Before taking up post in Salford I worked for 17 years as a lecturer University of Leeds and spent 1 day per week at a GP practice offering counselling and psychotherapy to those diagnosed with common mental health problems.
My allegiance is with the anti-psychiatry movement and as I have an interest in psychoanalysis, my practice and research activities are guided by the principles of this body of knowledge. I am a qualitative researcher and my interest is on intra, inter and extra-personal relationships and how such relationships impact upon an individual’s life.
My specific topics of interest are adults who have experienced childhood sexual abuse and later present with mental health problems; the mental wellbeing of young gay people; primary mental health care; service user involvement in research, education and practice; innovative and transformational learning and preparing mental health nurses for the emotionality implicit in their practice.
