Tacit and encoded knowledge in the use of standardised outcome measures

Greenhalgh, J & Flynn, R & Tyson, S & Long, A F 2008, 'Tacit and encoded knowledge in the use of standardised outcome measures', Social Science and Medicine.

Abstract

This paper explores how multi-disciplinary teams balance encoded knowledge, in the form of standardised outcome measurement, with tacit knowledge (in the form of intuitive judgement, clinical experience and expertise) in the process of clinical decision-making. The paper is based on findings from a case-study of a multi-disciplinary in-patient neurorehabilitation team in one NHS Trust.
