Abstract

This book chapter is based on a conference paper given at the Libraries without Walls 6 conference in Lesbos, September 2005. The paper outlines some of the problems involved in evaluating outcomes of health library and information services. It then describes the EMPIRIC study which aimed to investigate the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of different approaches to providing information for patient care. The methodology and practicalities involved in undertaking the research are outlined. The results obtained from the survey of health professionals and findings of the expert workshops are presented, providing evidence of the impact of library and information services on health professionals' ability to locate information for patient care. Finally the limitations of the study are assessed against the problems involved in evaluating outcomes of the health library and information services.
