Abstract

Social work with sex offenders operates at the intersections of sociology, psychology, and criminology. While key criminal
justice and corrections agencies operate with convicted offenders, social work(ers) may be involved with unconvicted people
who have behaved in a sexually harmful manner. Popular conceptions of the sex offender embodied in media reportage
provide a distorted account. Psychological and sociological theories relating to the etiology of sex offending are reviewed and
an integrated public health approach in which social work plays an important role is outlined.
